About

Welcome to O’Brien Studios! I am Megan O’Brien, a voice teacher, opera singer and stage director/producer. I am also the president and founder of Old Capitol Opera (www.oldcapitolopera.com). In May of 2012, I graduated with my Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Northern Iowa, under the teaching of the famous vocal pedagogue, Dr. Jean McDonald. Immediately after graduating, I moved back to my Alma Mater, (where I had received my Bachelor of Music at the University of Iowa in 2009,) under the teaching of Dr. Rachel Joselson, who has performed opera all over the world. My most recent roles include Anita in “West Side Story”, Madame Goldentrill in Mozart’s “The Impresario” and  the role of Velma Kelly in “Chicago: The Musical” (August 2014)  Although a full list of my operatic and musical experience can be found under the “Resume” tab, one of my favorite experiences was my debut role of “The Queen of the Night” in Mozart’s The Magic Flute which was performed with the UNI School of Music Opera Theatre at the famous Gallagher-Bluedorn Theatre (January 2012).

I began teaching voice in May 2008 while in my undergrad at UIowa. I continued to teach privately in Cedar Falls while in my graduate program. In May 2012, I opened my own private studio in downtown Iowa City in order to accommodate my eager returning students, and new faces who are excited to learn how to sing with a beautiful and healthy voice. Although my studio has continually stayed at 95% capacity, I try to accommodate as many prospective students as possible.   I am proficient in teaching the operatic and classically trained voice, and I am an avid believer that healthy, technical singing will help in all fields of vocal performance. I teach all ages and all levels of singing. I hope to be teaching you soon!
